Abstract :
This paper explores the impact of frequency selective fading on wireless channels. Unlike previous works that limited their investigations only to the narrowband or to the ultrawideband channels this paper explores the transition between these two cases. It shows that the Gamma distribution is a suitable probability density function for description of fading for channels with bandwidth varying from 1 MHz to 10 GHz and it can describe channels with all bandwidths only by scaling the distribution parameters. Thus, it can be used to select optimum bandwidth for a communication system or to evaluate performance of future communication systems that will exploit the fact that the impact of fading is scaled with bandwidth.
