Abstract :
Pressures on bandwidth for wireless internet access are increasing as more services are being pushed to an internet based access paradigm, and users are expecting to access services on the move. One of the most promising solutions is to use the spare bandwidth in television broadcast bands to provide this data access. In the most recent publications by regulators in the US and the UK devices will be required to use a geo-location protocol to request a list of available frequencies in their area. This requires a detailed database of spectrum occupancy in television bands. In this paper the results of the construction of a highly detailed database for the UK, based on the Parabolic Equation Model, are presented along with the findings of validation measurements which show the model is more accurate than existing Hata based propagation models. The amount of white space available with various transmission ranges is considered and general statistics for the available bandwidth in the UK are presented.
