Abstract
EISCAT, the European Incoherent Scatter Association, was formed in 1976 for the purpose of constructing and operating a complex incoherent-scatter radar (ISR) system in the auroral zone in northern Scandinavia. The paper reviews the principles of incoherent scatter radar and presents a brief history of EISCAT, with special emphasis on its radar antennas and the contributions to EISCAT antenna development made by Swedish scientists, engineers and companies. The planned next-generation incoherent scatter radar system, EISCAT_3D, is briefly discussed.
