Abstract
In this contribution we would like to show how Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) superlayers can be used to improve the performances of the phased array antennas with large periodicities by achieving an angular filtering at the array element pattern level. Our study demonstrates that a reduction of the grating lobes of the sparse array radiation pattern is possible thanks to this angular filtering. Such angular filtering is synthesized by the proper design of the FSS integrated with the array element antenna. In this contribution we demonstrate that the use of inductive types of FSS creates a higher roll-off of the element pattern, than dielectric based superlayers, thanks to the suppression of the spurious TM0 mode.
