Abstract
The edifice for the wide area measurement system (WAMS) is the phasor measurement unit (PMU). Thus PMU plays a very important role in the operation of WAMS and here comes the necessity for reliability analysis of PMU incorporating all the possible failures which may disturb its normal operation. This paper proposes the incorporation of switching failures in the standby unit. Markov model of each individual module is formulated, incorporating standby redundancy as well as switching failure probability. The overall availability of the PMU is calculated incorporating switching failure and is being compared with that for the conventional model.
