Abstract :
A proposal to use flow switching over a national network was studied in this paper to investigate its feasibility against the other solutions of switching. National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) has been considered here and supposed to be optically switched in its core. This network has been analyzed against different types of traffics. All the switches are assumed to be OpenFlow switches to provide wider range of network´s control and management, and the nine application types applied to this network were prioritized. Unlike the case in the current Internet which is based on Best Effort (BE) protocol we proposed a novel in dealing with the data according to the category it belongs to. We called this proposed routing protocol Content Oriented Routing (CO Routing). In CO Routing, when a congestion happens (when the data load exceeds the capacity of the link), the load due to the various applications will be shed according to their priorities and sensitivities to data loss. The data bursts due to the delay sensitive applications on the other hand is routed through those routes they provide the minimum possible latency delay. This content oriented network management was used to enhance the Quality of Service (QoS) of the network.
