  • Abstract
In restructured environment, the increasing load demand leads to transmission congestion in power system. If the congestion is not severe it can be relieved by either generation rescheduling and/or load shedding. The congestion management problem is to be dealt with some other improved methods for a severely congested system. In this paper, methods to relieve congestion by generation rescheduling along with installation of FACTS devices and/or load shedding, are presented. The congestion in the system is attempted to be relieved by generation rescheduling alone if not possible to relieve congestion then FACTS devices are considered. Among the various FACTS devices, Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) is attempted in this paper. Apart from relieving congestion, the other issues such as power loss and generation cost of the system are also minimized simultaneously. The optimal locations and sizing of multiple TCSCs along with generation rescheduling and/or load shedding is carried out using Evolutionary Programming and Particle Swarm Optimization techniques and are implemented on IEEE 30 Bus system for various loading conditions.
