Abstract :
Without a proper islanding control strategy, islanding a part of a distribution network connected with Distributed Generation (DG) may presents risks and hazards. This paper presents a control strategy for islanding which has considered different islanding configurations/areas. A main controller was designed to coordinate these islanding configurations. Synchronization of the island and grid was controlled for a seamless grid reconnection. To achieve synchronization, the governor and exciter of the DG were properly designed to regulate the frequency and voltage of the system during islanding. The controller was modeled considering an existing Malaysia´ distribution network of mini hydro power plant connected in parallel to the grid. To investigate the effectiveness of the controller, several case studies have been simulated. The dynamic response of the DG during islanding operation is observed. The results show that the DG is stable thoughout the islanding and the controller able to control the islanding operation for each of the configurations.
