Abstract :
The idea of reshaping existing centralized electricity networks to decentralized small scale local power networks namely micro-grids, operating whether autonomous or interconnected to main distribution grid, became an important discussion. Islanding of a generator inside the micro-grid can cause problems in operation and management of the network; therefore proper islanding detection is crucial. This paper presents the design and simulation of a micro-grid network to observe islanding detection and behavior of the system. One active method, rate of change of frequency (Rocof) and one passive method reactive power export error (Rpeed) are studied for detecting islanding. Study cases were modeled in software based system and results verified experimentally on the small scaled power system available at Smart Grid Test Bed at Florida International University.
