Abstract :
A method for morphological transformation of images of skin growth and lesions is presented. This method first reduces a color image into a color edged boundary image. A region of interest where a lesion boundary potentially exists is identified and segmented using image edges. The boundary is further refined through various filters for erosion and dilation. The enclosed area within the boundary is then filled for area calculation, from which a histogram is created to show the results. The result can be used to interpret if the skin lesion of interest has changed over time; particularly if it has gotten worse so further medical attention is needed. The described method involves two steps, image acquisition and image processing. The image acquisition can be done using any builtin cameras that are available in mobile phones, laptop computers, or tablets. The second step involves the use of a digital image processing tool, particularly MATLAB for image analysis. Because pictures can be taken with different cameras and under different lighting and other conditions, image processing is important to focus on and isolate the area of interest. In this way, progression of a skin condition can be monitored and diagnosed against a standard or against each other. Other methods of taking and analyzing images are also presented. The presented methods can be expanded to other uses such as telemetry in medicine and can potentially find their way to social media use for educational and self-evaluation purposes.
