Abstract :
Currently, 1 in every 3 American adults is considered clinically obese, placing a burden on the US economy in excess of $215 billion. Among the causes of this condition is the fast-paced lifestyle led by many Americans, compounded by lack of time to exercise. The Elasto-Trak combines the cardiovascular workout of a treadmill with the resistance training of springs, thereby enabling users to achieve the benefits of both exercises simultaneously. Testing of this device will entail testing the strength of the device´s frame, testing that the device successfully raises the user´s heart rate into the cardiovascular training range, and ease of use. The resultant forces on the frame were calculated assuming a maximum load of 300 pounds. Based upon these calculations, the Elasto-Trak will be able to support users up to 300 pounds without causing any detectable deflection of the frame. This fusion of cardiovascular exercise with strength training through a user-friendly medium will provide the basis for user compliance and convenience, thus promoting a healthier lifestyle.
