Abstract :
Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) face different challenges that disrupt communication between the vehicles, as interference and lack of connectivity. Due to the importance of VANETs-supported applications, such as those related to safety, it is necessary to ensure that the network runs in a satisfactory level to the applications requirements. Recent works have attempted to improve the resilience and survivability level of these networks, in which a significant set of them has considered adaptation techniques as a promising direction to follow in order to mitigate the effects of network conditions that may impair communication, resulting then in more robust networks. In this article, we (i) review the challenges in VANETs under the perspective of fault tolerance, resilience and survivability, (ii) present a taxonomy for resilience in VANETs, and (iii) provide a state-of-the-art for adaptive solutions. Based on those conceptual analyses, we present an architecture for a resilient vehicular network.
