Abstract
Traffic in wireless networks has become more diverse due to various applications running on smartphones. Moreover, traffic generated by background processes which has small amount of data and widely dispersed in time takes up a large portion of diverse data applications. To reduce signaling overhead due to frequent state transitions of radio resource control (RRC), the evolved nodeB (eNB) tends to keep User equipment (UE) in RRC connected state all the time. However, this approach leads to high UE power consumption and inefficient resource utilization at eNB, especially when UE has only background traffic. To cope with this problem, we propose three shaping schemes which transmit together accumulated background data to reduce both signaling overhead and power consumption at the same time. In addition, we analyze the performance of the proposed shaping schemes. The analytical results are verified with simulations.
