Abstract
This paper deals with the effects of split reference planes on single ended and differential stripline in typical stackup configurations using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. S parameter models are produced by full 3D electromagnetic simulations and then integrated into 2D signal integrity simulator. The influence of the gap on the signal is evaluated using the resulting eye-pattern in each case. Also, Mixed Mode (MM) S parameters and the return currents near the gap are employed to explain the immunity of differential signals to split reference planes.
