Abstract
This paper evaluates the performance of coal fired thermal power plants of small installed capacity power plants (<;500 MW) in India for the year 2008-09 by application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). DEA model is solved to calculate overall efficiency and input slacks. Further Cross efficiency is employed to draw out best practice power plants and their ranking is done on this basis. Slack analysis is carried out to explore the specific areas that need to be focused on for efficiency improvement. The result of this analysis may assist the management of the power plants to introspect and review their systems and processes for optimal use of resources.
