  • Abstract
    In this paper, a Phillips-Heffron model for a Photovoltaic (PV)-Diesel Generator (DG) grid connected system has been developed. The linearisation of the system has been carried out about a fixed operating point obtained by performing a load flow analysis on the system. A second order sliding mode controller has been used to control the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) of the PV array. The Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) enabled DG provides the reactive support thereby bringing about a decrease in the rating of the VSC. The system stability has been evaluated by computing the eigen values obtained from the state matrix. A method of improving the system stability has also been proposed by operating the PV array in a variable power mode. The results have been obtained using MATLAB R®.
