  • Abstract
    This paper presents the North American transmission availability trends. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) objectively analyzed the state of transmission availability and reliability through mining 2008-2011 outage data in NERC´s Transmission Availability Data System (TADS). This analysis not only provided an industry reference for historical transmission availability, it also offered analytical insights towards top controllable initiating causes to transmission outages. The conclusions can be used to develop a risk model that links reliability impact to common initiating events and deploy resource-efficient and effective solutions that result in outage reduction.
