Abstract
This paper addresses discrete control mechanisms that make use of synchrophasor measurement. The paper focuses on two use cases from practical experience in transmission system operation. The first case addresses managing power system oscillations with the use of early warning, constraint management and control-room response, described with reference to well-established practice in Australia. The second use case describes an automated response to avoid system separation between weakly interconnected generation centres in Iceland. The second case requires a faster response, and is therefore addressed by an automated control mechanism.
