Abstract
Among the nondestructive testing methods, the MFL(Magnetic Flux Leakage) PIG(Pipeline Inspection Gauge) and CMFL(Circumferential MFL) PIG are especially suitable for testing pipelines because the pipeline has high magnetic permeability. This paper introduces design process of magnetic instrument, namely, MFL PIG, and computational method useful for its analysis by using 3D finite element method is explained. Also, by simulating and measuring the signal of magnetic leakage field, it is possible to detect of axially or circumferentially oriented cracks in underground pipeline.
