Abstract
This paper outlines a novel theoretical framework to analyze the citation process in a broad context of communication studies. The devised model is validated with two large datasets. From the theory, a three-interval classification system emerges, which is intuitively appealing as it naturally divides all papers into "socially not acknowledged," "socially recognized," and "classics" groups, based on the social dynamics underlying the citation process.
