Abstract
We report results on dynamic medium switching algorithm (DMSA). This algorithm is used to decide on which interface to use when hybrid nodes are present in a wireless sensor networks. These hybrid nodes have a power line communications (PLC) interface as well as a radio frequency (RF) interface. The algorithm decision on selecting the appropriate interface for communications takes into account long-term stability of the link, packet error rate on the link, it uses an exponential backoff as well as it defers notification to routing layer to avoid fluctuations in routing decisions. The obtained results show that the algorithm improves packet delivery, lowers routing overhead, and improves the overall network lifetime.
