Abstract
Inhomogeneous electrical fields or insulation materials may lead to a localized increase of the electric field strength. The result is a discharge. If this discharge does not bridge the space between the electrodes (conductors) it is called partial discharge. In difference to this, a discharge that bridges the space at once is a total breakdown. If the partial discharge occurs on the surface of the conductor it is called corona.
