Abstract
Open innovation (OI) as described by Chesbrough (2003) is a new way for companies to generate innovations. Several studies discussed this topic mainly arguing for the use of OI. This paper puts the main studies in a time-wise perspective and argues for a phased model in the OI adoption process. The bespoke model is applied to the adoption of OI by German SMEs and consequently the current status, as well as barriers to reach the next levels are discussed.
