Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a two element array MIMO antenna with reduced coupling and surface wave effect. The coupling has been reduced by employing an electromagnetic bandgap structure between the two elements of the array antenna and a defected ground structure between the two antennas. The proposed MIMO antenna is characterized by very small antenna separation 0.06 λ. The coupling reduction principles for each antenna pair are explained. The MIMO array antenna performance was examined using electromagnetic full wave simulation. Results confirm that coupling coefficient has been reduced by 12 dB, to reach -30dB transmission coefficient with very close separation 3 mm spacing which is less than 0.06 λ.
