Abstract
This paper presents a design of a small size patch antenna using uni-planar electromagnetic bandgap (UC-EBG) structure. A square microstrip patch is printed on an inexpensive Fire Retardant-4 (FR4) board, and a 3 by 3 UC-EBG array is embedded in the ground. With the help of the UC-EBG array, the gain and bandwidth of the antenna is improved over the conventional patch antenna. Moreover, the size of the patch antenna can be significantly reduced. The proposed antenna design is fabricated. Measurement results show good agreement with the simulation results.
