Abstract :
This paper develops a hardware-in-loop simulation test bench to simulate an actual battery embedded in a type 1 wind generation system. This provides an opportunity for studying batteries under realistic charge/discharge profiles as they undergo such stress cycles in a wind application. A Shepherd battery model is developed for two battery chemistries and is compared to real batteries in the loop of the real-time simulation. The outcome of this study is to show the difference in the final value of the state of charge of the batteries in a purely mathematical simulation using a battery model and in the real-time battery-in-loop simulation.
