  • Abstract
Europe is currently in the process of preparing a top-down methodology to support the planning of a future pan-European transmission system that potentially includes prioritised electricity highways that have the capability to address European electricity transmission and market requirements from 2020 up to 2050. In line with European directives UK is now committed to 15% of all energy coming from renewable energy sources by 2020. In order to achieve these objectives, a pan-European electricity grid is required in order to facilitate the future transport of wind energy from the North Sea and solar power from North Africa to the consumption centres via Electricity Highway Systems (EHS). Future technologies revolutions have impacts on these electricity highway systems, such as roles of ICTs on future transmission networks. At the same time, transmission system operators must be provided with appropriate regulatory frameworks in order to overcome future challenges; therefore, efficient use of existing transmission networks and implementation of new, efficient investments in future infrastructures will be ensured.
