Abstract :
New generation of mobile networks has placed huge pressure on mobile backhaul infrastructure. In mobile backhaul networks, different technology generations - 2G TDM, 3G ATM/Ethernet, 4G IP/Ethernet - are delivered simultaneously over the same transport network. While offering similar services, these mobile technologies have different synchronization requirements. This article discusses the design challenges related to Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588v2 packet synchronization methods for successfully transporting packet data across mobile backhaul networks, especially on the implementation used by new generation high capacity 4G/LTE microwave links.
