Abstract
This paper proposes a two-step fault location method for DC-side short-circuit fault of low-voltage direct current (LVDC) distribution system. In the first step, fault section is identified and isolated by comparing fault current directions. In the second step, a backup capacitor is connected to the fault loop and the Prony algorithm is used to extract the characteristic frequency of fault loop which is used to calculate the fault distance. A ring DC distribution system is modelled in Simulink/Matlab. The accuracy and speed of the fault location approach are verified.
