Abstract :
Frequency is essential to power system and keeping it up to standard is one of the important tasks in the operation of power system. With the development of technologies for generation of renewable electrical energy and the increasing wind power, participation to the frequency regulation with wind turbine generators (WTGs) is important for security and stability of the wind power systems. In this paper, a new control strategy for Direct-drive Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (DPMSGs) is proposed - spinning reserve control. Instead of maximum power point tracking technique (MPPT) with the rotor speed fixed at the optimal speed, the output power of wind turbines has a certain reserve capacity under this strategy. A control loop is supplied to DPMSGs so that they can respond to the change of frequency of the grid. When the frequency drops, DPMSGs increase the output power to improve the frequency. Simulations are used to show that DPMSGs can function in frequency regulation as well as synchronous generators.
