Abstract
Survivability in Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) networks is a challenging task in modern network design against network failures. In earlier days, survivability schemes were implemented with the assumption that the physical layer conditions are ideal in nature. It is seen that in long haul WDM transmissions, four wave mixing (FWM) affects the quality of transmission in fiber. Therefore it is necessary to develop new techniques that will establish error free connections. In this paper, we have proposed an end-to end path protection algorithm that includes the impact of four wave mixing on the routing and wavelength assignment in WDM optical networks. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed scheme is much better when compared to the existing popular schemes proposed earlier for WDM optical networks with and without considering the physical layer impairment.
