Abstract :
Measuring a high-speed object flying at a speed of hundreds of meters per second, the same order as the sonic velocity, is a difficult problem but is in great demand in many industrial fields. In this paper, we propose an image measurement method specially designed for capturing high-speed flying objects. Conventionally, high-speed cameras with frame rates of more than 10000 fps are often used to observe high-speed flying objects; however, such cameras can record data for only a limited amount of time. Moreover, to avoid motion blur, a short exposure time (≈ 5 µs) and localized concentrated illumination are required. In contrast, our high-speed gaze controller, called a Saccade Mirror, can be used to keep the camera gaze pointing towards an object even while it is flying. We successfully obtained image data with temporal continuity, high brightness, and smallness motion blur.
