Abstract
In this paper, the topology of a transformer less STATCOM based on a novel modular multilevel converter (M2C) viz. MSTATCOM is described. Using its single-phase equivalent circuit, the detailed mathematical analysis of the M2C is presented. Based on analysis of the structural characteristics and operating principles of M2C direct current control method (DCCM) is adopted to modify the traditional capacitor voltage balance strategy. The modulation that also performs the capacitors´ voltage balance is not deeply studied in this paper. Simulation results of 10 kV, 15-level MSTATCOM are discussed. The viability of the M2C as well as the effectiveness of the voltage-balancing control is confirmed by experiment.
