Abstract :
A novel method using “Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol” (XMPP) was proposed to design environmental monitoring system. The community project XMPP software Openfire was chosen as the carrier of the server-side functionality. It had outstanding features such as multi-user concurrent application and security control, and could be added functionality by third-party plug-in. Through adding specially designed plug-in to the XMPP server, the communication task of environmental monitoring system was easily accomplished with better flexibility. The basic monitoring and control functionality were provided by the external plug-in, includes collecting the measured data from terminals and sending control signals to them. Compared to traditional ones, this solution had an outstanding advantage that server could actively communicate with any terminal whose current presence was available.
