Abstract :
Road traffic causes many problems, such as pollution, insecurity and congestion in great cities. Consequently, it becomes a necessity to develop regulation support systems to improve the fluidity of traffic in urban areas and especially at intersections. In this context, we develop a Traffic Signal Control System (TSCS) based on an Artificial Immune System (AIS) to supervise an isolated intersection and build a regulation strategy as soon as a disturbance (such as congestion or an accident) is detected. AIS is inspired by biological immune system, which exhibits many interesting features, including learning, identification, memory and distributed parallel processing. Our aim is to draw new analogies from biological immunity to take advantage of these features. Thus, the focus of this paper is to identify and implement new AIS concepts and mechanisms to control the traffic fluidity at intersections. The obtained results show that the new concepts and regulation strategies identified, implemented and presented in this paper have “good” performance and can be used to regulate the traffic in many interconnected intersections.
