Abstract :
He-3 filled proportional counter is very useful detector for thermal and low energy neutron detection. The proportional counter filled with He-3 is considered an ideal detector for the thermal neutron detection, as He-3 has a large neutron cross-section and it is relatively insensitive to gamma-rays. Further, such a counter can be operated at a lower voltage, and it can withstand extreme radiation environments. In the present work, the response of a He-3 proportional counter evaluated via the simulation approach has been reported. For the test, a tube with 5 cm diameter and 5 cm length has been designed and filled with He-3 gas. The response of the detector has been evaluated for the thermal neutrons in the energy ranges of 1.0 meV to 100 meV ranges. The higher obtained response confirmed that such a counter can utilized for the thermal neutron detection.
