  • Abstract
    This paper presents a new approach to the design of combinational digital circuits with multiplexers using Genetic Algorithm (GA).The only design unit used is 2-1 multiplexers for the synthesis of any logic function. Certain modifications have been imposed on the existing Shannon´s decomposition technique for the design of combinational digital circuits to arrive at an optimal design. Several circuits are synthesized with these modified methods and compared with the existing design techniques such as standard implementation of logic functions using multiplexers and implementation using Shannon´s decomposition technique using GA. With the proposed methods, the number of multiplexers needed is reduced considerably and the associated delay has also been reduced significantly.
