Foreword

On behalf of the IEEE Power Electronics Council I welcome you to the first annual Applied Power Electronics Conference, APEC ´86. This conference represents one of two new initiatives of the Council in carrying out its mission of supporting the professional needs of the power electronics community. The other is the publication of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, the first issue of which was published last month. These two activities, together with the long established Power Electronics Specialists Conference, provide us as a community with broad and easily accessible opportunities for communication, discourse, and education. The Council has tried hard to make these opportunities relevant to the varied applications contexts in which we work, from fractional watt, implantable power supplies to megawatt industrial converters.
