Abstract
In this paper, a relay based procedure for estimating a process frequency response at different oscillating points is presented. The feedback structure is derived from a common framework in which a limit cycle is obtained at the frequency where the process transfer function achieves a selected magnitude. The stability of the closed loop during the test is discussed and a simple procedure is proposed for process safe operation, which is suitable for industrial applications. The estimates are improved using discrete Fourier techniques. The overall procedure is illustrated by simulation examples.
