Abstract
An extended mathematical model of glucose-insulin metabolism in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is described in the first part of the paper. This consists of a submodel for glucose metabolism, a submodel for insulin regulation and a submodel for glucagon regulation. In order to restore normal metabolic patterns in diabetic patients, exogenous (artificial) insulin is administrated to compensate for the deficiency of endogenous insulin secretion. In the second part we describe a control system, based on the IDDM model, which mimics the insulin synthesis in the beta cells (stored pancreatic insulin), and controls the exact amount of insulin to be injected using a fuzzy controller.
