Abstract
Various schemes have been proposed to improve the power displacement factor and distortion of large ac to dc converters by using either free-wheeling diodes and thyristors or forced commutation devices operating at low frequency. This paper presents a generalized analysis of those converters and shows that various existing configurations can be considered as special cases of the generalized converter. Experimental results for the seven thyristor converter in inverter mode (with a single GTO) confirm the validity of the analysis.
