Abstract :
This paper describes a novel non-invasive approach to monitor blood glucose using basic salivary electrochemical parameters. Diabetes is a known systemic disorder which affects the metabolism of the body. Saliva is an oral multiconstituent fluid which reflects changes in the body physiology of diabetic individuals as compared to healthy ones. The various salivary parameters which are taken into consideration in the proposed approach are pH, REDOX potential and conductivity. Saliva and blood samples were collected in fasting state and analyzed for electrochemical parameters. Experimental results greatly move in accordance to blood glucose changes and salivary parameter variations. A predictive mathematical model was made on the salivary parameters to calculate blood glucose value with an acceptable accuracy. The model could predict diabetes qualitatively and quantitatively with an accuracy of 75 % although many challenges still persist in this novel approach.
