Abstract
The paper discusses the application of the Activated Sludge Model No. 1 for simulation and optimisation of a waste water treatment plant. The object-oriented continuous systems modelling environment OmSim has been used to perform simulation experiments. Object-orientation helps to better manage the complex system model, especially it allows a separation between modelling and simulation and it results in a flat model description. Such a model has then been applied to simulate the behaviour of the plant under normal and under exceptional conditions. Furthermore an optimal control problem is formulated and solved. The optimisation results show that significant savings in the costs for the operation of the plant are possible.
