Abstract
An efficient supervision system requires not only a highspeed system, but also high reliability (i.e. fault tolerant systems), high flexibility (generic design) and high scalability (distributed design). Industrial applications have revealed these absolute needs that distinguish modern architectures from the known ones. Marrying top-level researches from three distinct domains - automation, distributed artificial intelligence (D.A.I.), and distributed computer science -, ERIS Automation has designed a supervision architecture that fits all these criteria. In automation we found a functional description of the smart instruments we wanted to control, in D.A.I. we used the modularity of multi-agents systems, and distributed database technologies gave us a reliable protocol for transactional processing.
