Abstract :
Mechanical ventilation is an essential part of critical care medicine. Three main physiological functions are supported by ventilators: (i) oxygenation, i.e. the transport of oxygen into the alveoli of the lung, (ii) ventilation, i.e. the transport of carbon dioxide out of the alveoli of the lung, and (iii) respiratory activity, i.e. the support of the inspiratory muscle activity.
