Preliminary investigation of data communications usage for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)

□ The use of Air Traffic Contol (ATC) Data Communications services by Unmanned Aircrafts Systems (UAS) must be done without compromising efficiency or safety. □ FAA Data Comm Program Office sponsored the study to investigate Data Comm usage for UAS operations □ In this paper we present: — Alternative Architectures for the use of Data Comm by UAS — Additional Demand on Air Navigation Services Providers (ANSP)´s Data Comm System — Mobility management for the Ground/ Ground (G/G) architecture option — Impact on US´s Flight Management System (FMS) functionalities — Impact on message latencies.
