Abstract
This paper provides a reality check about where we stand with Next Generation Passive Optical Networks (NG-PON) energy efficiency. It highlights possible issues in implementing energy efficiency schemes in NG-PON2 and possible solutions. Finally it provides a forecast of the possible evolutions of energy efficient NG-PONs.
