Abstract :
This paper is concerned with the optimal commutation of two types of linear variable reluctance motors (one with coupled and one with uncoupled phases) under constraints on force ripple size ranging from zero ripple to unconstrained ripple. Constrained optimization methods are used in order to (1) generate force-speed characteristics parametrized by force-ripple size (2) produce current waveforms that minimize average power dissipation while producing a desired average force within specified force-ripple limits. Force ripple size is measured by the 1-norm of the force ripple waveform. The force models used are idealized analytical models derived from magnetic circuit analysis.
