Abstract :
Modern substation integrated systems trend to increase the level of power system automation and remote accessibility, to deliver information to a wide range of users in near real time and also allow to control number of tasks that streamline operations and perfomance [1]. This drastic increase in sophistication of the automation and hidden interconnections (eg. to the Internet), is exposing the electric power industry to a growing risk of electronic intrusions. As seen today, every month there are reports of threats and attacks from hackers, disgruntled employees, and terrorists attempting to breach and/or corrupt sensitive control systems of utilities. However, many defensive techniques and practices have been used to reduce the chances of cyber attack and electronic intrusions [2]. This paper analyzes early and potentially mature models using the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and will surface the access points/control levers vulnerable to cyber intrusions, that include timely mitigations to limit their impacts.
