Abstract
This paper deals with Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach to optimize the controller settings which in-turn minimizes the power losses and optimizes generator reactive power output in the system. The three control variables used are the transformer tap settings, the generator excitation settings and the Switchable VAR Compensator (SVC) settings for minimizing power loss. A case study of proposed technique is done on a practical Equivalent EHV Southern Region Indian 24 bus system for all optimization variables (control parameters) and effect on generator reactive power output is analyzed and results are compared with conventional Linear Programming (LP) Technique. The comparison clearly demonstrates GA approach performs better in controlling and minimizing power losses in the system and optimization of required generator VAR output.
